The precise origins of Reeves & Pain are lost in the mists of time. What is known is that W. Reeves and Sons ran their family funeral business out of 10 Cambridge Terrace in Oxford for many, many years. Mr Cyril Pain is then thought to have joined forces with the Reeves family for the princely sum of £5.00.

The Reeves and Pain business was subsequently purchased by Michael Duckworth and we have established from various sources that the business moved to its present site, a former bakery, here on Abingdon Road in 1961.The company has a fine reputation in and around Oxford for many years and this led to expansion and the opening of our Kidlington office in the late 1990’s. The Midcounties Co-oprative purchased Reeves & Pain in its entirety in 2000.

The purchase included the workforce, two of whom, Michael Shillingford and Derek James have been with the business for upwards of 18 years and I am pleased to say continue to “conduct” funerals for us. Jayne Hooper, who has been arranging funerals for Reeves & Pain for 7 years, and Sally Stewart form the basis of our present team at our Abingdon Road branch and Amy Beadle looks after the Kidlington office.

We all come from pretty diverse backgrounds but what we do have in common is a strong desire to care for each and every individual who comes through our front door and to be prepared to go that “extra mile” so, if at all possible, we can exceed our client’s expectations.

The funerals we deal with are also pretty varied. Whether Dons and students from Oxford’s renown universities or directors/ production line workers from our equally well known car plant we have dealt with them all. Rest assured whoever our clients Reeves and Pain have always offered the utmost care and respect and will continue to do so.
